The aim of the paper is to present the results of a research study that focused on the issue of reasons leading to the order of institutional education. Primarily we focused on the environment of children's homes. Our findings show that the reasons for ordering institutional education are not exclusively social factors, as is often claimed. Still, the reasons are primarily pathological behavioural patterns present in the original families. These findings will allow for the improvement of special education work in children's home settings.
